Women and business travel: let’s put an end to preconceived ideas!

“Men are more likely than women to be skilled in new technologies,” the clichés say. A study by HRS showed that in business travel, as in other walks of life, there is no reason for this gender-biased language.

Before leaving for a business trip, 86% of men worry that they are making the trip for no reason, compared to 55% of women. Fear of missing a train or plane also affects 86% of men. However, only 67% of women worry about this. Moreover, when it comes to being concerned about falling behind with their work, stress is more pronounced among men than women (47% compared to 41%). Results from the survey conducted by HRS suggest that women are more comfortable with the ups and downs and changes to routine of travel.

At a time where technological innovations are changing the way people work when travelling on business, HRS, the specialist in hotel solutions for businesses, published a study looking at how women embrace technological innovations in business travel, challenging the stereotypical view that women struggle more than men with computers and their progress.

The 2018 survey found that businesswomen appear to prefer efficiency in this area. The smart phone is now, more than ever, an essential way to optimise operations: 68.33% of women use an average of 1 to 3 applications to prepare for their trip. Applications by transport providers are most often used.

While email and telephone remain the main means of mobile communication (66.67% and 51.67% respectively), instant messaging is making progress in this market: 20% of women are already using this to obtain real-time information from their companies. In the hotel industry, the benefits of technology can primarily be seen in the services provided. “For 48.33% of the respondents, everything from check-in to check-out should be done using a smart phone. Leaving the hotel without needing to go to the hotel “desk” is a real plus”, according to the study.

It should also be noted that expectations are high. In answer to the question, “Is the technology provided by your company satisfactory?”, the response was rather mixed since the average score was 5.5 out of 10, with 40% of women gave a score of less than 5 out of 10. Many women also have high expectations of emerging technology: 55% believe that the ideal business trip in the future should be organised in full using a virtual assistant. 58.33% agree that artificial intelligence will revolutionise business travel and the travel experience.

In the FCM Travel Solutions satisfaction indicator published in September 2017, around 60% of respondents, both men and women, shared this prediction. Gender difference does not therefore necessarily mean a difference in point of view or approach. Rather than gender differences, it seems that technical innovation and usage is down to the individual rather than whether the traveller is male or female.
